Personal Training
Q: Are your personal trainers qualified?
A: Absolutely - qualified staff are the key to you achieving your health and fitness goals safely and effectively.  All staff have current industry recognised qualifications as a prerequisite to their employment with Life PT and a mandatory condition in maintaining professional insurance. Their key qualification is a Certificate IV in Fitness specialising in personal training.  In most cases this key qualification is supported by tertiary level training in Sport Science/Human Movement or similar undergraduate qualifications in the Health Science field.  All personal trainers also have current First Aid and CPR qualifications and are members of the industry body Fitness Australia.

In addition, Life Personal Trainers is committed to continued education of our personal trainers to provide our clients with the most advanced training systems. This is achieved through our frequent professional development workshop which keeps all of our personal trainers updated with the latest research, training theory and advanced techniques.

Q: What does the 'Fitness Australia recognised provider' accreditation mean?
A: The 'Fitness Australia recognised provider' is a quality assurance accreditation.  Fitness businesses who have this accreditation are bound by an industry code of practice which governs all aspects of their day to day running from safety practices and qualified staff to customer service ethics.  In short, this accreditation represents attainment of a high level of professionalism and service for customers of Life Personal Trainers.

Q: What process is involved in becoming a personal training client?
A: The first session that every new client undertakes is an Introductory Consultation with one of our senior trainers.  This session is used to clearly identify your training goals, identify any medical or injury concerns and to discuss any other issues that may have a bearing on your training program.  During the Introductory Consultation your blood pressure, resting heart rate and some other health measures (where applicable) will be taken to provide an indication as to your current physical condition.

The second part of the Consultation will be used to familiarise you with some of the equipment that you will be using in your ongoing personal training sessions and to introduce some of the key exercises that you will be doing.  Finally your preference for training frequency, times and trainer preference will be discussed and your first training session confirmed.

To compliment the work that you will be doing in your personal training sessions, a Dietary Consultation with our Accredited Practising Dietitians is highly recommended.  Diet and energy intake are critical factors in achieving success in any exercise program and our qualified dietitians Tanya Lewis and Rachel George will be able to assist you in improving your dietary regime in a healthy and sustainable manner.

Q: What sort of activities will I do during my training?
A: The type of exercises that you perform during training will be influenced by the goals that you identify in your Introductory Consultation.  Most clients will require a cardiovascular or aerobic component to build fitness, aid weight management and improve muscle tone.  This will include, but is not limited to, using cardiovascular equipment.  Other cardiovascular alternatives may be boxing, skipping, stepping and circuit work.  Training does not have to be confined to indoors and an outdoor component to some training sessions may be suitable for some clients.

Another key component to training sessions may be resistance training.  Resistance exercises are typically performed using body weight and free weights such as dumbbells or pin loaded machines.  Resistance training has a number of benefits including increased strength and bone mineral density, improved muscle tone, enhanced postural awareness and improved spinal stability.

Mobility and flexibility is another area that will be addressed to varying degrees as part of your training.  This may include assisted stretching exercises designed to help you increase the elasticity and length of muscles.

Q: What do I need to bring to my training session?
A: All you need to bring is yourself and a positive attitude!  Life Personal Trainers will provide you with a towel, chilled, filtered water and all of the expertise and motivation that you need for a great workout.

  Q: Can I train with a friend?
A: Yes!  Training with a friend, partner or relative is another option available to Life PT clients.  It is preferable that both individuals have similar goals but not essential that both are at the same level of fitness, as your trainer can make adjustments to cater for different abilities.  The benefits of training with a friend include extra motivation, having someone who understands the healthy lifestyle choices that you are making and discounted training fees.  Training sessions for small groups of 3 or 4 are also available on request.

Q: I am quite unfit and am concerned about pushing too hard during my training.  How can this be managed?
A: Training with a qualified personal trainer is probably the safest way to improve fitness for those people in poor condition.  Your current level of fitness will be assessed through our Introductory Consultation process and if necessary we will recommend that you get a medical clearance before training.  We would then liaise with your doctor if necessary to discuss your limitations.  At this point your training would commence under the guidance of one of our senior staff using technology such as heart rate monitors to monitor your progress.

Initial training sessions would be kept extremely light with the emphasis on building aerobic fitness and developing confidence.  Your progress would be reviewed regularly by your personal trainer, with training intensity only increased once an acceptable level of fitness had been reached.

Q: How does Life Personal Trainers manage clients with special needs?
A: Our consultation process is used to gauge the individual needs of each and every one of our clients, including those with special requirements.  We have a team of qualified, experienced personal trainers who have experience training a number of different clients including:

  Adolescent clients
  Elderly clients

Clients who have had hip replacements
Clients who have not exercised for 10+ years

Dietary Consulting
Q: What is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and how is that different to a nutritionist?
A: There is a lot of conflicting nutrition information available and it can be difficult to know the reliability of the source.  There are no nationally recognised standards for a person to be called a nutritionist, however a dietitian must complete undergraduate or post graduate qualifications in Nutrition and Dietetics.  Dietitians are skilled and trained in a large range of areas including, food product knowledge, counselling and motivation, food policy, public health and individual nutrition therapy for a range of lifestyle and clinical conditions.  An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) is a dietitian who is a member of the Dietitians Association of Australia.  As APDs, Life PT's dietitians Tanya Lewis and Rachel George undertake ongoing training and professional development and are committed to the DAA code of conduct and ethics.

Q: What sort of things can a dietitian help me with?
A: A dietitian can help with nutrition management of specific and more general conditions for you or your family including:

Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
  hypertension
  high cholesterol
  weight management
  polycystic ovarian syndrome
  energy levels
  pregnancy
  fussy eaters
  gastrointestinal complaints
  sports nutrition

If you think none of these conditions apply to you, a nutrition 'check up' can still be valuable to answer all those tricky food questions and provide suggestions for healthy balanced eating for you and your family.

Q: What is a Sports Dietitian?
A: A Sports Dietitian has extra qualifications in the area of sports nutrition.  As qualified Sports Dietitians, Life PT's Tanya Lewis and Rachel George can assist junior, recreation and elite athletes perform to their best, whether that be the next world championships, a social game of squash or a new member to the gym.  Education and valuable information can be provided about a range of issues including hydration, fatigue, recovery, pre-competition 'fuelling', use of sports drinks and supplements and achieving target weight, whether that be and increase or decrease in weight.

Remedial Massage
Q: Why do people go to see a remedial massage therapist?
A: Remedial massage can assist with a variety of health situations and enhances general well being.  Some examples include:

Relieve general muscle tension and fatigue
Treat chronic neck, shoulder and back complaints
  Reducing stress and encouraging relaxation
  Recovery of damaged muscle tissue
  Maintaining flexibility and mobility
  Postural correction
  Relieving tension headaches and migraines

Q: I've never had a massage before - can you tell me briefly what it involves?
A: Prior to your first massage appointment, your therapist will consult you on the reason for your massage and discuss any injury or medical issues that may effect your treatment.

You therapist will leave you in privacy to prepare for your massage - you will need to disrobe to some extent, depending on the focus area(s) of your massage.  Your therapist will respect your need for privacy at all times and towels will be used to cover body areas during the massage.

Massage is quite literally a 'hands on' technique used to manually relieve muscle tension and the only 'tool' used by your therapist will be massage oil to relieve friction of their hands against your skin.  The massage itself will use a number of techniques according to your specific issues and your therapist will continue to consult you on the level of pressure and stroke depth over the course of the treatment.

Q: Will I feel sore after my massage?
A: Your massage therapist will always consult you on the goal of each massage and the level of pressure that you prefer.  Deep pressure is suitable for many remedial treatments but your therapist will always work within your tolerance levels and consult you at all times.  A minor amount of residual soreness may be felt after the massage but will generally resolve rapidly leaving your feeling relaxed and pain free.

A: Long hours sitting at a desk working can take its toll on employees both physically and mentally.  Corporate Chair Massage is a 'come to you' service where our qualified massage therapists can provide your employees with a refreshing 15 minute neck, shoulder and head massage from their office chair.

Q: What topics can be covered in a health lifestyle presentation?
A: Each presentation is tailored to the needs of your individual organisation and staff.  Typical presentations include:

  Healthy eating on the run
  Exercise for weight loss
  Exercise for busy people
  Effective stretching techniques
