Life Personal Trainers and Linda-Marie Smith in the WHO Challenge - January 2009
Life Personal Trainers was involved in this year's WHO Magazine challenge working with Linda-Marie Smith. The final result saw Linda-Marie losing an amazing 20kgs but more importantly changing her lifestyle to make healthy choices for both herself and her family.

  Planning
The week leading up to the Challenge was spent talking to Linda-Marie and planning the next 12 weeks. An essential part to this process was talking to Linda about the limitations of attempting to lose weight over a relatively short period of time (12 weeks).

Our philosophy at Life Personal Trainers is about working with our clients to achieve sustainable, permanent lifestyle change. We were really keen to discuss this with Linda as we would consider that we had failed if she lost a large amount of weight over the challenge only to put this weight back on.

  Training Program
Linda-Marie's program for the challenge involved her training with a personal trainer for three 1 hour sessions each week where the focus was on interval training as well as circuit based resistance training. In addition, we set her three 1.5hr training sessions to complete on her own. These sessions were designed to be much lower in intensity and were typically a mixture of some jogging and brisk walking.

  Nutrition
Over the Challenge, Linda-Marie had weekly consultation with our Accredited Practising Dietitian, Tanya Lewis. Tanya reviewed Linda-Marie's typical pre Challenge food/drink intake and educated Linda-Marie on some key areas where she would be able to make significant changes.

This included decreasing portion sizes, increasing high fibre foods and altering cooking methods which would also benefit Linda-Marie's family. Tanya also helped ensure that Linda-Marie was consuming the right foods to fuel the high intensity exercise required for the Challenge. Given the nature of the Challenge, the degree of calorie restriction was greater than typically necessary for sustainable results.

  Our Thoughts
The main reasons that people fail in exercise programs are because they are often unrealistic with their estimation of how much exercise they will be able to incorporate into their week or fail to plan their exercise and don't schedule sessions in advance.

Although this seems like a simple concept, the act of scheduling training sessions in a diary already means that 'I'm too busy' is not an excuse anymore. Linda-Marie works as a registered nurse so would email us her work roster and other commitments a month in advance so that we were able to schedule her sessions outside of these times. This allowed Linda-Marie to plan each day and taught her how to prioritise exercise as part of her daily routine.

In a similar way, Linda-Marie learnt new 'habits' in relation to her food and is much more aware of appropriate food choices.

The support that Linda-Marie had through the Challenge from her personal trainers and dietitian, combined with her strong desire to succeed led to Linda-Marie's amazing results. We believe we have equipped Linda with the skills and knowledge to continue to maintain a healthy weight and make lasting lifestyle choices.
