Are you over 50? How’s your bone health?

A recent report for Osteoporosis Australia has shown that on current trends, the true cost of the disease will be $33bn over the next decade. http://www.osteoporosis.org.au/images/stories/documents/burden%20of%20disease%20analysis%202012-2022.pdf

It’s estimated that two thirds of Australians have low bone density or ‘brittle bones’, making them susceptible to fractures which dramatically effect mobility and quality of life.

So what can you do to improve your bone health?

There are 3 established areas for the prevention of osteoporosis – sufficient intake of dietary calcium, short periods of exposure to sunlight for Vitamin D and regular weight bearing and or resistance exercise. More information on these preventative strategies can be found on the Osteoporosis Australia website.
